RankBrain, Machine Learning System and SEO
Greg Corrado, Senior research scientist from Google confirmed that RankBrain could be among the third most important factor that Google search considers.
As Google continues to edge over the internet search engine competition, it has once again released some updates on signals that affect its Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). Countless of search queries have already been interpreted by this special artificial intelligence system
Simply put, RankBrain is still a machine but it learns from its own experience. Quoting from the Bloomberg article, “RankBrain uses artificial intelligence to embed vast amounts of written language into mathematical entities — called vectors — that the computer can understand. If RankBrain sees a word or phrase it isn’t familiar with, the machine can make a guess as to what words or phrases might have a similar meaning and filter the result accordingly, making it more effective at handling never-before-seen search queries.”
It is unlike other signals “that are all based on discoveries and insights that people in information retrieval have had, but there’s no learning,” This algorithm can process unfamiliar queries and provides phrases that show similar search results. The future of AI in Google looms great as RankBrain has already taken over 15 percent of queries a day. Jeff Dean, the Google Senior Fellow in the Systems and Infrastructure Group explained that RankBrain is involved in every query, and affects the actual rankings probably not in every query but in a lot of queries.
It is obvious that RankBrain does not compete with existing algorithms but feeds them with better filtered queries. RankBrain is not a new algorithm update but as it learns and develop overtime it could have a great impact to the SEO community. Its high time for companies to upgrade to high quality content strategy to adapt to Google’s algorithm and provide better user experience.
